In a welcomed development for tertiary students across the country, the Government of Eswatini has announced an increase in monthly student allowances from E1,690 to E2,000, effective this month. This marks the first adjustment since 2019, addressing long-standing calls for improved financial support for students.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Phila Buthelezi, who stated that the adjustment reflects what the government can currently afford. He assured students and stakeholders that the ministry is committed to continually reviewing and improving support measures as the country’s fiscal space allows.

“This increase is part of our ongoing efforts to support students in their academic journey. We understand the financial pressures many of them face, and while this is what is feasible at the moment, we remain committed to making further improvements in the future,” said Minister Buthelezi.

The increase comes amid rising costs of living and growing demand for better student welfare policies, and has been met with a generally positive response from student leaders and education advocates.
