University of Eswatini (UNESWA) Vice Chancellor Professor Justice Thwala has called on government to consider introducing a meal allowance for students as part of efforts to address challenges affecting their welfare.

Professor Thwala proposed that the allowance be paid directly to the university refectory to ensure that students have access to meals while pursuing their studies.

He said such an intervention could help address food insecurity among students, which he linked to the high number of dropouts and suicides recorded at the institution.

The Vice Chancellor’s proposal highlights the need for additional student support measures aimed at ensuring that financial challenges do not prevent students from completing their studies.
